Catalyst CR

Interactive Culling

Using Interactive Culling early in your case is a good way to understand your document population and eliminate irrelevant documents from your review. During the culling process you can:

  • Identify and assess key custodians, dates, and theories for your case
  • Explore e-mail conversations among key custodians
  • Test and sample search terms
  • Adjust collection strategies and review legal hold issues and circulation

There are several tools within Catalyst CR that make culling easy, including building your initial searches using date ranges, focusing on key custodians and terms, and using proximity and wildcard searches. Correlation Navigators are especially useful during interactive culling. These include Field and Text Filters, Key Concepts, and More like This.

Techniques

There are several ways to cull your data. We recommend using both inclusive and exclusive techniques.

Inclusive techniques involve drilling in on what you know about your case and focusing on key dates and custodians. Some inclusive techniques are:

  • Develop and refine search strategy with sampling
  • Drill down on key custodians
  • Identify potentially privileged documents
  • Identify potential confidential information

Exclusive techniques involve looking for false positives and excluding non-responsive data. Some exclusive techniques include:

  • Review and analyze false positives in your search results
  • Review sender domains for personal emails and mass mailings (e.g., newsletters)
  • Find similar documents using our More Link This feature to exclude non-responsive
