Guidelines for Getting the Most Out of Fast Track ProcessingWith Fast Track Processing, users can submit email and other electronic files directly into Catalyst CR. Our automated system will process, load, and index the files and make them available for search, review, and production in Catalyst CR.
The process is simple. Start with native files of any type - email collections (Exchange, Notes, Outlook Express, MBOX), Office files, PDFs, images, photos, text files, etc. Bundle them by custodian into one or more ZIP or RAR container files. Then FTP them to Fast Track. That's all there is to it.
With Fast Track Automated Processing and Loading, you don't have to wait days to see your documents. You can start your review the next morning or even later in the day of processing.

Fast Track Processing Setup
Fast Track processing is currently tied to a specific matter (case) in Catalyst CR. Once your matter has been set up, we can also activate Fast Track Processing.
Fast Track setup involves two steps: First, set up your Fast Track processing site by choosing processing options (described below). At present, this is a manual step. You will convey this information through a processing workbook or using Catalyst ST. In the future, this will be automated as well.
Second, identify your custodians and provide some basic information about each. Specifically, we need:
- Custodian name
- Associated sub-collection
- Associated language (Code Pages)
Custodian Name: We set up a Fast Track FTP folder for each custodian with daily folders underneath. There will also be a catchall folder called "Unknown." If you submit a hard drive or other magnetic media, please organize your documents into custodian folders with names that match those on your list.
Sub-Collection: Documents will be processed and placed in the named sub-collection. If your site does not have sub-collections, the files will be placed in the General sub-collection.
Language/Locale: If you will be submitting non-Unicode documents, we can process them according to the original locale settings. This is particularly important for Japanese, Korean, and Chinese documents.
Fast Track Processing Options
During the setup process, choose from a wide range of processing options including:
- English and multi-language files (Unicode or code pages)
- Explode container files (ZIP, RAR)
- Exclude NIST, system, and other unwanted file types
- De-duplicate globally or by custodian
- Extract embedded objects but exclude logos/pictures (gif, bmp, jpeg)
- Create HTML previews of email and Office documents
- Choose Time Zones for email normalization
Fast Track Processing also includes a number of standard practices including virus checking, file analysis, inventory reports, and file extraction from containers, etc.
Using Fast Track FTP to Submit Files
Fast Track processing files can be submitted via FTP or shipped on hard drives. FTP submission provides the quickest turnaround and is our preferred means of delivery.
As part of our setup process, we create a special Fast Track FTP site for your case. Log in to the site using the credentials we provide to upload your files. We recommend using the FileZilla FTP client. It is free, simple to use, and works well.
For each case, we set up a special processing folder called P2dropbox. Click that folder, and you will see a series of sub-folders named for each of the custodians you have set up. There will also be a folder called "Unknown." Use this folder when there is no specified custodian involved.
We create a new subfolder daily for each custodian. Open that folder and submit your files for processing.
The process is similar to the one we have used for Fast Track automated data loading. For more information or a demonstration, contact your Catalyst Project Manager or other representative.
Protocol for Preparing ZIP Files
Fast Track processing requires that you submit native files in a ZIP or RAR file container. You can name the container (ZIP, RAR) files as you like, but we recommend not using spaces in the file name. Instead, use dashes or underscores to separate words, e.g. large-file-name. We do not support multi-part ZIP or RAR files at this time.
We recommend keeping individual submissions to a maximum of 4GB each. There are several reasons for this. First, ZIP is a 32-bit format. Files over 4GB tend to be corrupt and will fail during the process. Second, we have found that deliveries over 4GB each slow down during automated file extraction and copying. Our testing showed that these processes did not have a linear timeline. We can handle two 4GB files much faster than one 8GB file.
We recommend the RAR format for foreign language documents. ZIP files are not Unicode compliant. If you submit foreign-language files using ZIP, it may mangle the file names and it does not keep track of the language settings on the user's machine. As a result, non-Unicode pages may not be processed correctly. RAR files also record the language settings on the user's computer. We can track this information and use it to better process non-Unicode files.
